Volleyball Facts

  • Volleyball is the second most played sport in the world next to football (soccer).
  • Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William Morgan at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, MA., USA.
  • The three hits per side and back row attack rules weren't instituted until 1920.
  • The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was founded in Paris in 1947.
  • The Amateur Volleyball Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (AVA) was formed in London in 1955.
  • Volleyball was introduced to the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.
  • The Whitefield International Volleyball Tournament was held for the first time in 1973. This tournament, held in Bath and organised by the City of Bristol Volleyball Club, continues to be the largest volleyball event in Britain.
  • World Schools Volleyball Championships was held in Bristol in 1980.
  • Beach Volleyball was introduced to the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. Audrey Cooper and Mo Glover from Great Britain finished 9th.
