South West Champs

May 20th, 2003
After a tough season battling for survival in the First division, Speedwell had a chance to relax at the 2003 South West Championships in Plymouth this weekend. As the only team from the First division at the tournament, it should have been a walk in the park for the win-starved squad.

Speedwell’s first two matches on Saturday morning proved to be the most important ones. With a few of the regular players missing for these two games, Speedwell narrowly lost both. Although Speedwell convincingly beat all remaining opponents in their draw that day, the valuable points lost from the first two games relegated them to the round robin plate competition on the sunday where they ran out easy winners.

Despite the disappointment of the Saturday it did not prevent the boys from having a great night out. The squad welcomed two new members to the team for the evening (Jack Daniels and Coca Cola) and many new re-unions were planned. As the streets of Plymouth were crawling (literally) with the tournaments’ volleyball players, Speedwell had a chance to bond and reflect on the season behind them. The team's Matt Pierce sagely noted that "technically, we are steadily improving and that next season will not be as big of a culture shock." With a bit of First division experience behind them now, Speedwell hopes to put together a better performance for the 2003-2004 season starting in September.

Come out and support us!
