New Venture and Home Venue

August 27th, 2003
Speedwell Volleyball Club, ranked 8th in England after the 2002-2003 season, is happy to announce the formation of a new affliation with the University of Bristol Sports Department. With talks going throughout the summer, the collaboration was made official this month with the booking of Speedwell's home matches at the University's new sporting facility: the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health.

The alliance is intended to greatly benefit both parties. By promoting and developing volleyball within the University, the venture will provide students with the opportunity to develop, train and compete at the country's highest level while playing with Speedwell. In turn, it is hoped that the alliance will raise the profile and interest of volleyball and increase playing opportunities in the Bristol area. Speedwell's Chairperson John Watson comments on the development:

"We [Speedwell] are very excited about the potential that this new relationship brings to both sides. The University has great resources which have been topped by the opening of their new sports centre. Furthermore, each year new students are arriving from all over the UK and abroad who, if given the correct guidance and coaching, could rapidly develop into players of the future. Speedwell hopes to play a role in this development and not only provide them with years of experience but also provide players the opportunity to play at the highest level possible in the country. By doing this we also hope to strengthen our own club and the retention and representation of a Bristol and South West based team in the top league while providing eligibible players with a route into national squads. The overall ambition is that together we will improve volleyball awareness in the Bristol area."

Although some details need finalising, Speedwell and the University hope to put together some 'learn-to-play' sessions for those who are new to the sport. More information will be made available as the 2003-2004 season approaches.

The new sports complex is located on the University of Bristol campus, not too far from the city centre:
