Match Report: Aquila Lynx V Speedwell
| September 20th, 2003 |
Determined to get an early win on the board this season, Speedwell travelled to London to take on an unknown Aquila Lynx team that was newly formed when a flagging Aquila team merged with London Lynx. The first set was a hard fought set where both teams traded points up to 19-19. Then disaster struck when a run of bad passes and good blocking to support some strong serving pushed Aquila to a rapid closing of the first set 25-19.
The second set was an even tighter affair with Speedwell matching the newly formed Aquila Lynx point for point. At 24-24 a serving error by Speedwell gave Aquila an opportunity to close out the set which they did successfully with a solid block of a Speedwell attack.
Determined to push the match to a full five setter, which was now the only option for Speedwell, the away team came out with guns blazing. The set reflected that of the first for its blocking and hitting as well as some excellent defensive play in the backcourt by Speedwell's Mike McCarthy and Steve Williams. At 19-19 a Speedwell attack was shut down by a strong Aquila block. This was followed by a controversial line call on the opponents serve that went against Speedwell. With concentration affected at such a crucial stage, two Speedwell passing errors gave Aquila a sniff of the finish line. After a string of tough rallies and a strong defensive effort by Aquila, the host teams' final serve clipped the top of the net and dribbled over to give Aquila the third set 25-19. |
