Speedwell Relegated

May 1st, 2004
Despite an optomistic outlook for the last few games of the season, Speedwell Volleyball Club finished last in the First Division. The last game against City of Salford summed up the Club's woes for the year. Apart from a push in the third set to put the game to 1-2, the team's heart just wasn't in it. Plagued by a number of injuries throughout the season combined with the loss of their only training venue halfway through the year, Speedwell didn't have the mental toughness to fight back against a strong Salford.

All is not lost for the club though. Many on the team feel that relegation will do the club some good. The Second Division will certainly allow the younger players to develop their confidence. The loss of a number of veterans after the 2002-3 promotion to the First Division meant that a number of young players were thrown into the spot light in the nation's top division.

There is also talk of Speedwell merging with Whitefield Volleyball Club to form a sort of super club. It is thought that such a merger would allow the clubs to pool their resources in the Bristol area, giving more people an opportunity to play the sport.
